Music Psychotherapy & Counseling

What is music psychotherapy?

Music psychotherapy is the practice of using music and the arts within the therapeutic relationship in order to achieve growth and change, specifically to address psychological issues and goals.  Music can serve as the primary mover of the therapy at times, and at other times, words are used to process and gain insight from the musical experiences.

Do I need to play an instrument or sing to benefit?

Music psychotherapy requires no previous musical training or knowledge.  However, an openness to trying new experiences will result in enhanced opportunities to explore, grow, and develop.  Some experiences rely on music listening, imagery, discussion, while others involve active music making.
