Working with me

I am currently working under the supervision of a licensed psychologist to complete my post graduate clinical hours and supervision for my LMHC. My supervisor is Dr. Tom Battocletti and his license number is:  Indiana / 20040887A.

I meet with all clients for an assessment session in which we get to know one another and explore potential areas of focus for therapy.  Therapy goals are ongoing and can shift over time, but it is important to have a general direction and intention for the work.  Sessions are one hour long, and I encourage weekly sessions for the greatest benefit.  Some clients come to therapy with a specific goal that can be accomplished in a limited about of time, such as learning to cope with a specific stressor, or get support for a pressing, time limited issue.  Other clients may benefit from longer term treatment such as clients with complex trauma or persistent mental health challenges.

As a therapist I am client-centered and resource-oriented, allowing the client to determine areas of focus and working with their strengths and resources rather than from a deficit model.  My approach also incorporates psychoanalytic theory and technique by exploring the unconscious, the symbolic, and the relationships with self and others.  I incorporate a feminist lens when applicable to deconstruct oppressive social structures and encourage client empowerment.  I integrate existential, spiritual, and transpersonal approaches to explore meaning and purpose, and I have experience guiding clients in expanded states of consciousness through the Bonny Method Guided Imagery and Music.

Specializations

I specialize in creative means of accessing and working with inner resources, and unconscious and symbolic material.  I utilize both verbal and nonverbal ways of working, including: verbal psychotherapy, music, imagery, improvisation, and somatic exploration within a counseling and music psychotherapy framework.

My work with clients focuses on exploring the nonverbal languages of emotion, imagery, dreams, symbolism, and somatic wisdom.  By uncovering, listening to, and working with messages these languages share, clients improve their wellbeing and functioning in the world.

I work with the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, which utilizes music listening in an expanded state of consciousness (through relaxation and concentration) to stimulate imagery and awareness.  Imagery consists of inner sensory impressions such as mental pictures, feelings, memories, thoughts, and bodily sensations.  By tapping more deeply into their present moment awareness and consciousness, with the support of the music and the therapist, clients can access more of themselves through connection with their inner imagery.  With more connection to inner resources and self-knowledge, clients can improve their navigations through life's challenges.

I also utilize techniques from Analytical Music Therapy, which incorporate referential improvisation and verbal discussion as tools for exploring the self within the therapeutic relationship.  Associative musical techniques such as splitting allow the client to explore conflicting parts of the self musically in order to process emotions and gain insight.  Improvising on themes allows the client to explore important issues with the musical and interpersonal support of the therapist.  Using music as creative, symbolic expression, clients are able to move beyond stuck points and gain greater self efficacy.

In addition to music-centered approaches, I am currently studying the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) in order to bring body-based wellness skills and trauma processing skills into my work with clients.
